Plumtree District League cancels matches

THE Plumtree District Soccer League Committee has cancelled matches for the league’s second round as teams are yet to register their players.
Second round games were supposed to start on 14 September.

This comes after teams had been warned that matches would not resume unless all players have been registered.

In an interview yesterday, the chairman of the league, Chakudza Mutarika, said only three of the league’s nine teams had licensed players.

“Games for the second round were supposed to commence on 14 September but they have been cancelled due to failure by teams to co-operate. We made it clear to all teams that matches would not start unless all players had been registered and licensed.

“We still have a long way to go because only three teams have licensed their players and we are waiting for the remaining six teams to do the same,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mutarika appealed for sponsorship of the league’s teams.
He said financial constraints were forcing some of the clubs out of the league.

Mutarika said three teams had pulled out since the league’s inception in April.

“The league has so far lost three teams since its launch in April. Plumtree District Hospital quit the league after failing to raise players in July.

Nxele Rovers and Imbizo dropped out of the league last month after facing financial constraints,” he said.

Mutarika said this development had reduced the number of teams in the league to nine.

“We started the league in April with 12 teams and as of now the teams have been reduced to nine. We will be working with these teams but we expect to have new clubs next year as Zebras Football Club have confirmed their participation.

“We also hope that Nxele Rovers will be able to rejoin us next year as they are close to securing a sponsorship deal,” he said.
