MATABELELAND South Province is set to host its Independence Day celebrations in Plumtree for the first time, marking a shift from the traditional venue of Phelandaba Stadium in the provincial capital, Gwanda.

The provincial celebrations will take place at Plumtree High School, while the national 45th Independence Anniversary celebrations will be held in Gokwe North District, Midlands Province.

This year’s celebrations will run under the theme “Zim@45: Devolve and Develop Together Towards Vision 2030.”

Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Dr Evelyn Ndlovu, said preparations are well underway.

The preparations include securing venues, arranging performances by local artistes, planning parades and promoting participation from schools, community groups and civic organisations.

“As Independence Day approaches, preparations in Matabeleland South are progressing well. Local authorities and community leaders have been actively involved in organising various events and activities to ensure a memorable celebration,” said Dr Ndlovu.

Dr Ndlovu said the decision to hold the celebrations in Plumtree reflects a conscious effort to decentralise festivities, allowing various communities within Matabeleland South to experience the national event first-hand.

She emphasised that this move will bring recognition to Plumtree’s cultural heritage and foster a sense of pride, among residents.

“The sense of unity and excitement among residents is palpable as they gear up to celebrate their freedom and heritage. Such events are an opportunity to showcase the region’s unique contributions to the nation’s history and development, promoting tourism and local business in the area,” said Dr Ndlovu.

“To the people of Matabeleland South, I would like to emphasise the importance of Independence Day as a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom.”

Traditional leaders from Mangwe District expressed their honour at hosting this year’s provincial Independence celebrations.

Chief Tshitshi highlighted the importance of the event in instilling a spirit of patriotism, especially among the youth.

“The liberation struggle brought with it valuable gains, such as independence, which has ushered in significant development for us as a nation. People should know about this history, especially the youth, so that it doesn’t get distorted,” he said.

Mangwe District’s acting District Development Co-ordinator, Ms Ruth Sauramba, said the community of Plumtree is elated to be holding the provincial Independence celebrations for the first time.

She assured that all systems have been set within the district to ensure the event’s success. —@DubeMatutu
