PMIZ partners with SA firm for PRINCE2

partnership with a South African based project management training and consultancy firm, Project Management Academy (PMA) to offer the PRINCE2 qualification.
The partnership was consummated via a Memorandum of Understanding that allows PMIZ to equip local project managers with the globally sought after PRINCE2 project management qualifications.
The PMIZ-PMA partnership will see training towards this qualification running formally for the first time in Zimbabwe starting in May this year.
PMA CEO Mr Jurie Smith who was in the country for the signing ceremony met PMIZ members at a reception held at Harare Polytechnic.
Welcoming Mr Smith, Vice Principal of Harare Polytechnic Mr Tafadzwa Mudondo said Zimbabwean project managers need training in advanced project management skills to reduce the country’s reliance on engaging foreign project management consultancy firms to implement macro-economic development projects such as the Optic Fibre-Link project.
“We are porous to engaging in all meaningful public-private-partnerships to build technical human skills that we currently lack for the country’s growth and infrastructure rehabilitation projects,” said Mr Mudondo. PMIZ is currently in a two-year-old partnership with Harare Polytechnic. The new engagement of PMA will see an expanded programme of locally facilitated project management skills training for project managers who have been travelling to South Africa and other countries or learning on-line to obtain international qualifications such as PRINCE2.
“I have been waiting for many years to obtain this qualification . . . ” said Harare based IT Project Manager Mr John Dawson after meeting Mr Smith at the Harare Polytechnic reception.
At the moment there are no Zimbabwean based training institutions that are licensed to offer the PRINCE2 qualification hence PMIZ and Harare Polytechnic will host the training under the licensed PMA brand.
The Project Management Academy is a widely known brand name in South Africa and has project management client names such as DHL, Pricewaterhouse-Coopers and Investec on their list of testimonials.
WHAT IS PRINCE2?
PRINCE2® (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a de facto UK standard for managing projects.
The PRINCE2 method is internationally accepted as the leading ‘best practice’ project management approach.
It is the standard approach within central and local government, the wider public sector and throughout the private sector. The method is scalable and can be tailored to reflect any organisation’s existing standards, approaches and business.
Upon completion of this course, delegates will have a basic knowledge and understanding of Project Management and project-based work.
There is a significant element of syndicate work to the course in a case study environment, to support a solid understanding of project-based work according to PRINCE2®. Project Managers who take up the course successfully are awarded the Foundation and Practitioner qualification in PRINCE2® Project Management. The key features of PRINCE2 are:
Its focus is on business justification, a defined organisation structure for the project management team and it has a product-based planning approach
It emphasises on dividing the project into manageable and controllable stages and its flexibility allows it to be applied at a level appropriate to the project.
PRINCE was established in 1989 by CCTA-UK (the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency), since renamed the OGC (the Office of Government Commerce).
It was originally based on PROMPT, a project management method created by Simpact Systems Ltd in 1975. PROMPT was adopted by CCTA in 1979 as the standard to be used for all Government information system projects.
When PRINCE was launched in 1989, it effectively superseded PROMPT within Government projects.
PRINCE remains in the public domain and the Crown retains the copyright. PRINCE is a registered trademark of OGC.
PRINCE2 was published in 1996, having been contributed to by a consortium of some 150 European organisations.
Most United Nations sponsored humanitarian projects globally including in Zimbabwe are currently switching to the PRINCE2 methodology.
