ZIMBABWEAN comedic polymath Chik Aljoy, celebrated for his diverse talents as a comedian, actor and ventriloquist, recently delivered a daringly satirical performance on the People Need Comedy (PNC) podcast.
The show, hosted by Mpho “Popps” Modikoane, Farieda “Pharoahfi” Metsileng, Tsitsi Chiumye, and Dillan Oliphant, featured a lively panel that included Bexta Ndabalime, Thabiso Mhlongo, and Shanray Abrahams. Together, they delved into one of South Africa’s most sensational crime sagas, the case of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester and his accomplice, disgraced doctor Nandipha Magudumana.
In the uproarious episode, Aljoy gleefully donned the mantle of “devil’s advocate”, slipping into the fictional persona of a flamboyant lawyer defending Bester and Magudumana.
With razor-sharp wit, he lampooned their desperate attempts to manage their public image, particularly in the wake of Magudumana’s failed bid to block Netflix’s Beauty and the Bester documentary.
Aljoy’s performance struck a balance between dark humour and social commentary, offering audiences a much-needed comedic release from a case that has horrified and fascinated the nation in equal measure.
Speaking about the experience, Chik Aljoy said: “It was fantastic reconnecting with old friends on the People Need Comedy set. Shows like this are vital not just for established acts, but also for creating pathways for younger comics. That’s the mission behind pushing my team: Melly
Dawu (Simelinkosi Moyo), Shammy Moyo, Bobby Maro, Mitney Mitch, Dolly Gugs, Baby Thelma, UBaba UNcube. They’re incredibly funny, and it’s about building that visibility.”
Aljoy’s work with emerging comics reflects his vision for African comedy on a global stage. South African audiences also know him from his acting, most notably in DiepCity, Mzansi Magic’s hit telenovela that wrapped up in 2022.
He portrayed the character Goodplan, sharing the screen with fellow Zimbabweans Chrispen Nyathi and Mluleki Moyo, a role that cemented his footprint in the South African entertainment scene.
With his satirical legal antics on PNC, Chik Aljoy once again demonstrated his uncanny ability to turn even the darkest of headlines into laughter, cementing his reputation as both a fearless entertainer and a mentor shaping the future of comedy.
