Demhe (42) was not formally charged when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma who remanded him out of custody to September 17 on US$1 500 bail.
He was also ordered to report three times a week at CID Law and Order section and not to interfere with State witnesses.
According to the State, Demhe is employed by Astra Transport Bulawayo as a truck driver and is trained in handling hazardous chemicals and is responsible for transportation of goods locally and within the Sadc region.
Prosecutor Ms Fransica Mukumbiri alleged that on July 16 Demhe left Beira, Mozambique, for Zimbabwe with a CureChem Overseas Private Ltd consignment of 19 580kg of sodium cyanide.
It is further alleged the consignment was cleared into Zimbabwe at Forbes Border Post, Mutare, by both Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and Environmental
Management Agency officials since he was carrying a harmful chemical to both humans and the environment.
The chemical is imported into Zimbabwe mainly for gold processing in a process called cyanidation.
