A 41-year-old man has been arrested in Sanyati following the brutal shooting of a police officer early yesterday, as law enforcement intensifies operations to bring to justice those behind violent crimes targeting citizens and security personnel.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41), who allegedly shot dead Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41) after the callous and brutal shooting to death of Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati early today,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He said the suspect, who was wanted in connection with the murder of businessman Joseph Mutangadura in August this year, had earlier shot Detective Constable Ngwenya of the CID Homicide Unit, who was part of a team trying to arrest him.
“After shooting Constable Muchechesi, the suspect went on to rob Abraham Mayavo (30) of US$5 as he was in the process of making a report to the police,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He commended members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari and Patchway who quickly mobilised and assisted in apprehending the suspect before he could flee.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari and Patchway who quickly mobilized and assisted to effect an arrest on the suspect. The police will release more details in due course,” he said.
