POLICE have arrested five armed robbers who wanted to rob BancABC in Kamative, Matabeleland North Province.
The incident occurred on Tuesday and was confirmed by National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
“We would like to confirm that the incident happened on 27 August. Investigations are in progress,” he said.
According to a source, police from Bulawayo’s Homicide section received information from an anonymous person that Derren Tshuma, Proud Gumbo, Mxolisi Sibanda , Thamsanqa Moyo, Michael Donald Sibanda, and Majority Ndlovu planned to raid BancABC bank situated in Kamative.
Police officers from CID Homicide, Canine section, Police Special Troops (PST), a section from Support unit were then dispatched to Kamative. On the following day, police ambushed the robbers and at around 1250 PM a gunshot was heard within proximity of the bank.
“At around 1250 hours a gunshot was heard in front of BancABC bank, Tshuma, Gumbo and Sibanda were seen fleeing in different directions. The police team gave chase and arrested Sibanda and Gumbo who was armed with a knife,” said the source.
However, Gumbo and Sibanda managed to escape and hid in the thicket. On 28 August detectives from CID stationed at Hwange and Support Unit jointly carried out investigations and arrested Gumbo.
“Police pounced on him while he was asking for money to board a bus to Bulawayo. Gumbo implicated Thamsanqa Moyo and Michael, Donald and Ndlovu and they were later arrested,” said the source.
Police are yet to arrest Mxolisi. During investigations, Tshuma disclosed to the police that he and Gumbo robbed ZB Bank of US$15964 on 31 December 2022. Gumbo and his accomplices allegedly robbed Mac’s garage in Hwange, getting away with cash and cell phones. It is reported that on 31 June this year, Gumbo and his accomplices robbed a pharmacy in Hwange getting away with cash. On 8 January once again Gumbo in the company of his accomplices allegedly stabbed a fuel attendant at a fuel service station in Hwange and robbed him of US$72 and cash.
