Police discover human remains near cemetery

The gravediggers, who were clearing a bush to expand West Park Cemetery along Victoria Falls Road, found remains that are suspected to be of a human being on Wednesday morning.

The remains are suspected to have been buried in a shallow grave several years ago.

When Chronicle visited West Park Cemetery on Thursday, police had collected the remains, while the shocked gravediggers were shunning the bushy area, which they said could be having more human remains.

The gravediggers who spoke on condition of anonymity said they called the police after discovering the remains, which they believed were buried in a shallow grave more than 50 years ago.

“We were clearing a bushy area near the cemetery to prepare for new graves and we were shocked after discovering human remains because the area has never had graves before.

“We immediately called the police who will conduct investigations before the remains are reburied. We suspect that someone could have been killed a long time ago and was buried in a shallow grave,” said an employee.

The employee revealed that human remains were discovered about a metre below the ground.

“Normally when we clear land for new graves we sample that particular area to see if it is suitable for graves and has no rocks underneath.

“While we were digging the first hole to sample the ground, we discovered the remains and immediately called the police,” he said.

Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the discovery of the remains, saying they were yet to be identified.

“We are investigating a case where remains suspected to be of a human being were discovered at West Park Cemetery. Investigations are continuing to determine if the bones belong to a human being or an  animal.

“If the bones are found to be of a human being they will obviously be reburied decently, but if they belong to an animal they will be thrown away,” said Insp Moyo.
