Police dismiss claims

In a statement yesterday, police spokesperson senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said police arrested one Lovejoy Tombo over the issue who paid for the 40 copies.

“The police would like to put across the correct facts surrounding an incident where a Newsday vendor fell victim to criminal elements who dispossesed him of 40 copies of Newsday newspapers on June 19. The vendor, Emmanuel Mhorombe, reported to the police that two male adults claiming to be Zanu-PF youths had taken 40 copies of the Newsday without paying for them. Investigations were promptly carried out by the police and in the process they were assisted by Zanu-PF Mbare 7 district youth chairperson Edmore Mandovha,” she said.

Snr Asst Com Charamba said Tombo admitted that he had taken the copies without paying for them.
“The accused person and not Zanu-PF officials as alleged in the Newsday dated June 20, 2013 paid for the 40 copies of the newspapers that were unlawfully taken from the vendor by him.

Subsequently, the vendor who had reported the matter to the police withdrew the case against the accused upon receiving payment for the papers.”
