Police had to intervene after a violent fight broke out at Mkhosi General Dealer in Brunapeg, Mangwe District, following what authorities said began as a simple political discussion among patrons.

The shop is owned by MDC politician Edward Tshotsho Mkhosi Moyo.

According to police, the situation quickly degenerated into chaos as the argument escalated into a physical confrontation involving several people, prompting frightened patrons and nearby residents to call for police assistance.

Some eyewitnesses said bottles, stones and other objects were allegedly thrown as rival groups clashed both inside and outside the shop, forcing the business to temporarily close as the violence spilled onto the surrounding area.

Confirming the incident, Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Thabani Mkwananzi said officers were deployed to the scene after the situation became unmanageable.

“What started as a simple political discussion unfortunately escalated into a huge violent fight. The situation deteriorated rapidly, and members of the public alerted the police. Our officers attended the scene and managed to disperse the crowd and restore order,” said the spokesperson.

Although no official figures on injuries were immediately available, some individuals were reportedly treated for minor injuries at nearby clinics.

Police said investigations are underway to identify those involved and warned members of the public against turning political debates into violent confrontations.

“While people are entitled to express their political views, this must be done peacefully and within the confines of the law. Acts of violence will not be tolerated,” added the spokesperson.

The incident has sparked concern among residents in Brunapeg, with community leaders calling for calm, tolerance and peaceful engagement to prevent further flare-ups linked to political discussions.
