Police duo nabbed in bribery storm

Two police officers, who went viral in a video receiving bribes from illegal money changers last week, have appeared in court charged with criminal abuse of duty.

The duo Rudo Chirengendure and Michael Nyasha Mupandira were not asked to plead when they appeared before regional magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa.

They were remanded in custody to today for bail considerations.

The complainant is the State represented by Luckson Mhara who is a police officer at ZRP Harare Central Operations.

Allegations are that on April 18 the two were deployed at Parkade rank situated at the intersection of Nelson Mandela street and Rezende street to patrol and arrest illegal money changers, touts and illegal vendors.

While in the exercise of the duo was captured on camera receiving money as consideration to release a suspect who was arrested and was in handcuffs.

The two allegedly then removed handcuffs from a female suspect and released her which is contrary to their duties as public officers. The video has since gone viral online. Lancelot Mutsokoti appeared for the State.
