THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has expressed concern regarding the alarming rise of sexual abuse and rape cases involving minors across the country.
In a statement on Wednesday, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the heinous acts were predominantly perpetrated by individuals who are supposed to ensure the safety and protection of these vulnerable children.
“In most cases, these heinous crimes are being perpetrated by individuals entrusted with the care, safety and protection of these vulnerable children,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi said offenders include parents, siblings, guardians and other relatives.
He noted the disturbing trend of strangers targeting minors, often luring them with sweets, money or offers of transportation.
“In some cases, prophets lure minors through parents or guardians on the pretext they want to assist them,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
“It is disturbing to note that some of these perpetrators are people who are expected to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these children. Instead, they are exploiting and abusing the trust placed in them.”
Commissioner Nyathi said in some instances, parents have been complicit, either assisting the offenders or concealing the crimes.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns parents and relatives who sweep these cases of sexual abuse under the carpet that they risk being arrested for defeating or obstructing the course of justice,” he said.
Recent cases illustrate the grave reality of the situation.
On February 25, a five-year-old girl was sexually abused by an unknown suspect near Bravoland Mine Compound in Mberengwa.
In another case reported on February 26, a 13-year-old girl was abused in September 2024 by her 36-year-old uncle while collecting food.
A 14-year-old girl was sexually abused by her uncle from February to November 2024, with the crime coming to light after she began to complain of stomach pains.
“Members of the public are implored to come forward and join hands with the police in the fight against child sexual abuse,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
