There is a new contender in the Harare Division Two League.
Starting as a social team that brought people together on weekends, Harare-based Super Lions has transformed into a professional outfit that is joining the ZIFA Northern Region Division Two log.
Speaking at the team’s launch in the capital, Super Lions founder and president Welcome Shumba stated that the club is not just there to add to the numbers but has its sights set on making an impact in the football community.
“We have launched our club, and I am pleased to announce that we will be competing in the ZIFA Northern Region Division Two in the upcoming season. We are not here to make numbers; we are here to compete,” Shumba emphasized.
The club president expressed their aspirations to emulate the achievements of Scottland. In their inaugural season in the first division, Scottland earned promotion to the top flight.
“We have seen it happening with our counterparts. Our objective is to ensure our team qualifies for the Northern Region Zifa Division One by the end of the season. With the players we have, I am confident that we possess a squad capable of competing at the highest level and achieving promotion to the next Division in the near future,” Shumba stated.
Shumba further revealed that, following an impressive turnout of youths at their social games, the club was developed into a professional outfit to combat the scourge of drug and substance abuse.
“The club started as a social entity, but we recognized the need to transition into a professional outfit. In addition to creating employment opportunities, we aim to use the club as a platform to fight against drug and substance abuse,” he said.
The average age of the club is 23.
