POLICE have launched a manhunt for the kombi driver who tried to dodge a police roadblock resulting in his kombi overturning and injuring 16 passengers.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said the kombi driver escaped from hospital where he was admitted following the accident on Wednesday morning.
“He was treated at the hospital and escaped and we are looking for him,” he said as he condemned obstruction of police work by members of the public.
“Police officers could not execute their duties as they were assaulted by the kombi crews. The police were supposed to arrest the driver and escort him to hospital but failed to do so as they had been assaulted.”
The accident occurred along Old Khami Road after the driver tried to avoid spikes reportedly thrown in front of the vehicle after he ignored the signal to stop at a roadblock.
Insp Moyo said: “Members of the public should learn not to tamper with police work. If they are not happy with how police conduct their duties they should use proper channels to address their complaints. My office is also open for that.”
He condemned violence against police officers saying police were doing investigations to arrest the culprits who assaulted the cops.
Insp Moyo said the driver, who is yet to be identified, would be charged with negligent driving and culpable homicide in case any of the passengers died.
He said the driver was also under age as public transport drivers should be 25.
Meanwhile, hospital authorities said the injured were in a stable condition and that no lives had been lost.
