Police impose ban on dangerous weapons

Police here have issued a prohibition notice for possession of dangerous weapons in the district over the next four months.
The ban, which is with effect from Wednesday, also covers Masvingo city and comes as the country gears for harmonised elections slated for July 30.

According to the prohibition notice, Masvingo Central District regulating authority Chief Superintendent Percy Sidija Ndou said police invoked a constitutional provision, to put a ban on the carrying of offensive weapons within the policing district.

“I ,Percy Sidija Ndou, being the regulating authority for the Zimbabwe Republic Police Masvingo Central District , that is, Masvingo Rural, Central, Chikato, Rujeko, Renco and Muchakata policing areas, has invoked Section 14 of the Public Order and Security Act, Chapter 11:17 and the provisions contained therein with effect from June 7, 2018 to September 7, 2018,” said Chief Supt Ndou.

He said the constitutional provision prohibits anyone from carrying dangerous weapons.
‘’It is declared that no person shall carry or display in a public place whether openly or by concealment in a public thoroughfare, the following weapon; catapults, machetes ,axes, swords, knives, knobkerries, daggers or any traditional weapons.

“Any person found in possession of such weapons shall be guilt of an offence,” said Chief Sup Ndou.
Police are on record warning they will not tolerate violence during elections.
President Mnangagwa is also on record preaching peace.
