POLICE have launched a sweeping operation targeting armed criminals following a surge in violent robberies across the country, with authorities vowing to restore public confidence through heightened patrols and rapid-response deployments.
The operation has already seen increased police visibility in identified hotspots, including residential areas and central business districts where suspects have been preying on businesses and unsuspecting residents.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the development, saying the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is treating the spike in armed crime with the utmost urgency.
“The ZRP has rolled out a comprehensive operation targeting known offenders and syndicates involved in these crimes. Members of the public will notice increased patrols, stop-and-search exercises, and deployments in strategic areas,” he said.
Comm Nyathi said several suspects have already been arrested, while investigations are ongoing to dismantle organised criminal networks believed to be behind the incidents.
“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and to co-operate with the police by reporting any suspicious activities. Community co-operation is critical in the fight against armed crime,” he said.
Residents in some of the affected suburbs have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the intensified police presence will deter criminals who have been operating with increasing boldness, often targeting cash-in-transit vehicles, small businesses and homes.
Mr Tawanda Moyo, a resident of Woodlands suburb said: “We have been living in fear, especially at night. The increased police patrols will be and are a relief, and we hope they will continue until the situation stabilises”.
Police have also encouraged businesses to review their security systems and avoid keeping large sums of cash on their premises, warning that criminals are increasingly targeting soft spots.
Authorities say the operation will be sustained over the coming weeks, with a focus on intelligence-led policing and swift response to reported incidents, as law enforcement agencies work to curb the wave of armed robberies and bring perpetrators to justice.
