Police have intensified investigations into yesterday’s petrol bombing of the Zimbabwe Institute of Legal Studies offices owned by Zanu PF Harare provincial chairperson Cde Godwills Masimirembwa, and severe burns inflicted on the security guard.
The eight-man gang was reportedly travelling in a three-vehicle convoy when it attacked the offices and the guard along Leonid Brezhnev Avenue (formerly Fife Avenue).
The guard sustained burns on nearly 80 percent of his body and was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment.
Police say the motive for the attack remains unknown and investigations into the case have been launched.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said police were working on the suspicion that it was a petrol bomb.
At the offices near the ZACC premises yesterday, a team of police experts had been deployed to investigate the matter.
In an interview, Cde Masimirembwa said he was informed by one of his administrators about the incident.
“I was phoned by our administrator of this college, which I own, and told that around 4am, this place was petrol-bombed,” he said.
“There were about eight bouncers in two Toyota Fortuner vehicles and a Honda Fit. They were carrying petrol with them in a container.
“They attacked our security guard, made him lie down and beat him up, poured petrol on him and burnt him. As it is, he is battling for his life at Parirenyatwa Hospital. He has over 80 percent burns.”
According to Cde Masimirembwa, the assailants threw a petrol bomb and ran away.
“That is basically what happened. Clearly, these people did not come to rob or steal anything. It is something else.
“It was one office mainly where the petrol bomb landed. I think their hope was that the place would then catch fire, but fortunately that did not happen,” he said.
The attack comes as the Government continues to call for peace, warning that anyone who destabilises the prevailing peace and tranquillity, will meet the full wrath of the law.
