POLICE have intensified raids and patrols targeting machete-wielding gangs who continue to terrorise communities in different parts of the country.
In recent months, there has been an increase in the number of people being attacked by the gangs, especially in mining towns. More than 2 000 suspected machete gang members have so far been arrested countrywide.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “As police we have intensified raids, patrols and surveillance in all areas which include mining areas, residential areas, business premises and also places where the public will be gathered for various activities.”
He said members of the public should report any suspicious people and activities.
“We urge members of the public to report whenever they see any group or any suspicious individual who would be moving around holding a machete, iron bar or any other weapon which is intended for committing crime. In this regard, regulating authorities who are Officers Commanding Districts in the country have prohibited the carrying of machetes, iron bars and other weapons which are being used to commit robbery cases, murder cases and other related crimes,” he said.
Asst Comm Nyathi said anyone found in violation of the law will be arrested. He said police have attended to incidents involving the use of dangerous weapons to commit serious crimes over petty issues.
On the public’s concerns that police are slow to respond when called to crime scenes, Asst Comm Nyathi said:
“I may not be aware of specific reports where police have delayed but once a report has been made, definitely action would be taken.
