Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba has assured the public of peace during the 2026 Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day holidays, saying the ZRP have intensified deployments, patrols and surveillance operations across the country.
In a statement on Wednesday, Commissioner General Mutamba said police had activated enhanced security measures at national, provincial and district commemorations, as well as at other public gatherings.
“As the nation commemorates the 2026 Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces holidays, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all commemorative activities across the country are conducted in a peaceful, safe, and secure environment,” he said.
“I have directed all Officers Commanding Police Provinces to implement comprehensive security measures at national, provincial, and district commemorations, as well as at other public gatherings. Police deployments, patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, and surveillance activities will be intensified to uphold law and order.”
The Police Commissioner General urged members of the public to play their part by observing the law and exercising caution throughout the holiday period.
“Motorists are urged to exercise maximum caution on the roads by observing all traffic regulations, avoiding speeding, overloading, reckless driving and ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys,” he said.
“Drivers should also avoid travelling when fatigued and should plan their journeys adequately to minimise road traffic accidents during the holiday period.”
Commissioner General Mutamba also appealed to parents and guardians to closely monitor children during festivities, warning against exposing them to potentially dangerous situations.
“Parents and guardians are encouraged to closely monitor children during festivities and avoid leaving them unattended in public places,” he said.
“Members of the public should secure their homes and property before travelling and avoid displaying valuables or carrying large sums of money unnecessarily.
“People are also urged to refrain from accepting food, drinks or transport offers from strangers, as such actions may expose them to criminal activity.”
The Commissioner General said the ZRP would continue strengthening its operations against drug and substance abuse during the holidays, targeting manufacturers, suppliers, traffickers and peddlers.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police remains resolute in its fight against crime, as well as drug and substance abuse,” he said.
“Operations targeting drug manufacturers, suppliers, traffickers, and peddlers will be enhanced. Members of the public are encouraged to report all drug-related activities at their nearest Police Station so that the law may take its course.”
The police also warned motorists against drunk driving.
