POLICE have recovered five cows that were stolen from an abattoir in Gwanda and are appealing to members of the public to identify three of the beasts whose owners are not known.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the five cows were intercepted at Mbokodo Abattoir last week on Wednesday. He said police launched a manhunt for three suspects who fled upon realising they had been caught while delivering the cattle to the abattoir.
He said it was discovered that two of the cattle were stolen from Matshetsheni area in Gwanda and have been claimed by the owner.
“I can confirm that we intercepted five stolen cattle at Mbokodo Abattoir and investigations are underway to apprehend the suspects. Three men arrived at the abattoir in a truck loaded with the five beasts intending to sell the animals.
“During the process of sale, officials had queries over the papers which the three suspects produced. A misunderstanding arose resulting in police intervening. The three men, upon realising that they had been caught, fled from the scene,” he said.
Chief Insp Ndebele said police impounded the stolen cattle. He appealed to members of the public with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to approach any police station near them.—@DubeMatutu
