Several sporting disciplines — football, netball, volleyball, chess, darts, table tennis, tennis and athletics — are featured at the gala.
Addressing delegates and athletes at the official launch of this year’s event, police representative, Mekia Tanyanyiwa, saluted the athletes.
“Today we add a legacy, a sense of community, as we celebrate the dominion of sports within the province.
“This event speaks for the commitment that all of us in support unit hold for sport. It is good for us to come together as sports enthu- siasts.
“I am sure we are going to witness athletic performances of highest quality during the course of this gala,” said Tanyanyiwa.
He said sport was a crucial tool in the lives of humans.
“Sport does not only build character but it reveals character.
“I encourage you to showcase best athletic talent and spirit of comradeship. The best thing that matters in your sport is your performance.
“This field is in preparation of the Commissioner-General’s gala and should be taken seriously.
“It is also the foundation for players and athletes’ selection for the 2013 Sarpco games to be held in Namibia.”
Six districts — Fairbridge, Buchwa, PGHQ, Chikurubi rural and urban, and Chingadzi districts — are taking part in the events.
The field has brought together a total of 618 athletes.
