Police launch blitz on unregistered vehicles

The exercise has so far resulted in police impounding 110 vehicles.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Leonard Chabata said the operation, was aimed at removing all unregistered vehicles from the country’s roads.

“The move is also aimed at curbing the road carnage that has seen many lives lost on our highways. The unregistered vehicles, which continue to operate on our roads, are partly to blame for these deaths. They mostly operate on the country’s routes without complying with road traffic regulations. We have so far impounded 110 vehicles since the operation started last week and the operation is still ongoing in all parts of the province,” he said.

Insp Chabata said about 110 people were also expected to appear in court for violating the Road Traffic Act.

“As a deterrent measure we want the owners of the vehicles to go to court so that they may be prosecuted for violating the Road Traffic Act. At the moment, we are looking at papers for all  impounded vehicles and those that would have been found operating without the required papers that include  clearance and permit from VID will be sent to court for prosecution,” he said.

Insp Chabata said most of the impounded vehicles were Ipsum, Gaias and Toyota Noah.
