Police launch cross boundary crime awareness campaigns

and Harare Metropolitan provinces aimed at curbing cross boundary crimes.
The launch was held simultaneously in Marondera, at Mbudzi in Beatrice, Juru Growth point and Chitungwiza Police New Camp in Dema all situated in Mashonaland East.
The campaigns are expected to be carried out in the other targeted provinces under the programme for the general public and motorists.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesman Inspector Bulisani Bhebe said the awareness campaigns were necessitated by the nearness of the provinces to Harare.
There has also been a concern on the upsurge in crime where stolen goods find a ready market in the capital city.
“We have discovered that goods stolen from the provinces have found their way to ‘Siya-So’ market in Mbare.
“We are also concerned about the road carnage due to speeding by motorists in the provinces,” Insp Bhebe said.
He said unsuspecting commuters have also continued to fall prey to highway robbers, losing cash and other valuables.
Insp Bhebe said they were conscientising motorists on the increase of accidents due to speeding, overloading and worn tyres.
“The campaign is also creating awareness on increasing cases of aggravated indecent assault perpetrated by female motorists on unsuspecting male commuters, often demanding sex at gunpoint and thereafter collecting sperms for suspected ritual purposes.
“Members of the public are encouraged to take note of number plates of private vehicles that offer them lifts and if possible text such details to other people to assist with the detection of culprits,” he said.
He said the campaigns in Marondera roped in the Environment Management Agency that educated the public on the dangers of veld fires and related issues.
