THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a nationwide security and traffic enforcement blitz targeting major roads, residential areas and public spaces ahead of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, amid growing concerns over rising road carnage and criminal activity during public holidays.
With an anticipated increase in both human and vehicular transport, police have since been deployed to enforce road traffic laws and maintain public order.
In a statement on Friday, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation is aimed at ensuring the safety of travellers while clamping down on lawlessness.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has deployed adequate manpower on the roads to ensure the public travels safely as the country commemorates the 45th anniversary of Heroes and Defence Forces holidays,” reads the statement.
“Decisive action will be taken against motorists who flout road rules and regulations.”
He said police will impound all unroadworthy vehicles, unregistered or plate-less cars, pirate taxis (mushikashika) and buses operating without permits.
Drivers found behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol will be arrested on the spot, he added.
He also warned public service vehicle operators against overloading and employing touts, some of whom have been linked to criminal activities, harassment and intimidation of passengers.
“Drivers are encouraged to cooperate with police officers on checkpoints and patrols to collectively promote road safety,” added Comm Nyathi.
“The Commissioner-General of Police has directed police commanders to deploy police officers to patrol in residential, industrial and central business districts and effect arrests on criminal elements, including those peddling drugs and illicit substances.”
Special police crack teams set up to respond to armed robberies, he said, will remain on high alert throughout the holiday.
“Meanwhile, the public is urged not to carry or keep large sums of money at home or business premises,” he continued.
“Companies and individuals are reminded not to share information on financial transactions or status with each and every employee or colleagues.
“This will assist to curtail the leakage of information to criminals.”
The police will also take action against unlicensed liquor outlets and those breaching their permitted operating hours, citing links between alcohol abuse and violent crimes.
“As schools close for the holiday, parents are advised to guide and properly monitor their children to curb cases of rape, drug and substance abuse.
“School authorities and parents should avoid night travelling for the safety of pupils.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores the public to report criminal activities to the nearest police station or contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197.”
