Acting National Traffic Unit spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said the operation would end this Friday.
“Police will be heavily deployed in most of the country’s major roads to ensure that sanity prevails,” said Asst Insp Chakanza.
“We want to ensure that we don’t lose any lives since there will be high volumes of traffic on the roads.”
He said schoolchildren would be travelling to their respective homes following the closure of schools.
Asst Insp Chakanza said they had noted with concern that most of unroadworthy vehicles, pirate taxis, unregistered vehicles and public transport would be ferrying these pupils.
“Most of them will be overloading passengers for profits and as law enforcement agents we will be on high alert for such,” Asst Insp Chakanza said.
Operators should ensure their vehicles were roadworthy and had all required documents before putting them on the roads. He said police were going to impound unroadworthy vehicles before sending them to the Vehicle Inspection Department for inspection. Others will be fined for violating various traffic regulations.
Police are appealing to the public to desist from boarding unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles to avoid loss of lives.
