The Zimbabwe Republic police have finally made significant progress and arrested the first suspect in the previously mysterious Ruwa unlawful entry case where US$176 000 was stolen.

In early June, H-Metro reported that the complainant, Harare businessman Joseph Maruta, collected US$181,000 from a farm in Kwekwe as payment for supplying potato seeds.

After returning home to Kambuzuma, he picked up his pistol — loaded with two magazines of 15 rounds each — and headed to his girlfriend Leoba Hunda’s home in Springvale, Ruwa.

Prosecutors alleged that on June 7, the suspect Blessing Kennes of Hurudza township in Shamva teamed up with his accomplices who are still at large and connived to rob Maruta.

They allegedly proceeded to Hunda’s residence where they broke into Maruta’s Toyota GD6. The thieves broke the rear back window screen of the car before they gained entry into the house.

They stole cash amounting to US$176 050-which was in a plastic bag, US$6 000 which was in Maruta’s jacket, a Samsung S23 Ultra and a Derya pistol with serial numbers TG970-24L78774 with two fully charged magazines before they disappeared from the scene.

Maruta woke up at around 0500 hours and discovered that all his belongings had been stolen before he made a report at ZRP Ruwa.

On August 13, detectives from CID Homicide, Harare received information to the effect that Kennes who was involved in this case had been spotted in Mbare.

The detectives swiftly reacted to the information and Kennes, who led to the recovery of cash amounting to US$20 250, a Derya pistol with serial numbers TG970-24L78774 which was hidden in the precast wall’s holes at Hunda’s residence.

Kennes also led to the recovery of a Toyota Nadia on registration number ADP 4306 valued at US$3500 which he had bought using the stolen cash.
