He said 39 mine workers were trapped in a mine shaft on 29 September 2023 at Bayhorse Mine adding that they would continue to release more information as rescue operations were still underway.

A church service in honour of the four, was held at Chegutu Hospital on Monday afternoon where various people including the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo and Chief Ngezi, Peter Pasipamire, were in attendance.

Assistant Chegutu District Development Coordinator and district Civil Protection Unit deputy chairperson, Ms Dzosai Muzvidziwa said efforts were still in progress to retrieve the trapped miners.

“We are still working to ensure that all the trapped miners are retrieved. So far, the bodies of only four miners had been retrieved by Saturday and they are the only ones that have been retrieved from underground. All four have since been buried,” she said.

Various mining firms have also been helping in the search and rescue effort currently underway.
