HARARE provincial police commander, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, led police officers and guests as they observed a minute of silence for the 17 people who perished in a road traffic accident along Seke Road in Chitungwiza.
Comm Chikunguru led officers and guests at St Mary’s Police Station, which is near the scene of the horrific accident. He commended the people who rushed at the scene to assist police and other stakeholders in trying to save lives.
The minute of silence was held at a ceremony where Members of the Crime Liaison Committee (CLC) handed over a motor vehicle to the police yesterday. ‘‘It is my distinct honour to stand before you today, officiating at the handover and takeover of a brand new Daihatsu Mira, generously donated to ZRP St Mary’s by the Crime Liaison Committee (CLC),’’ said Comm Chikunguru.
‘‘This is not just a vehicle, it is a symbol of solidarity, community ownership, and the deep-rooted belief that public safety is everyone’s responsibility.
‘‘The US$4,600 spent on this car was not spent in vain. It was an investment into peace, order, and the security of our homes and streets.
‘‘I extend my deepest gratitude to the entire Crime Liaison Committee, under the dynamic leadership of Mr Gonzo, for initiating, funding, and delivering this timely donation.’’
He added: ‘‘Your vision and generosity are a shining example of what can be achieved when citizens take an active role in supporting policing efforts. With this additional car, our officers will be better positioned to respond swiftly to emergencies, maintain visible patrols, and engage effectively with the community.
‘‘As we all know, policing in the modern world demands mobility, speed, and adaptability. Criminals are using advanced tools and high-powered vehicles. If law enforcement is to stay ahead, it must be empowered with the right resources. This donation pushes us one step closer in achieving that.
‘‘Let me also take this opportunity to commend the officers at ZRP St Mary’s for your professionalism, resilience, and commitment in serving the community.
‘‘Your work often goes unnoticed, but today, we celebrate you and affirm our support. The recent accident blocked the flow of traffic along Seke Road but within an hour, police cleared the road.
‘‘At the same time, let me say that we expect nothing less than the best service to the community from you. ‘The badge we wear is not just a symbol of authority, but of duty and service.’’
He challenged the police officers to go on another level in their fight against crime.
‘‘I challenge you to scale up your efforts in line with our constitutional mandate.
‘‘Just as importantly, I wish to celebrate the strong bond that exists between the station and the St Mary’s community – a bond nurtured through trust, cooperation, and consistent communication.
‘‘This station is not working in isolation; it is embedded within the community fabric, and today’s gesture proves that.
‘‘Do not tire of doing good. Keep building, keep protecting, and keep strengthening your own community. Because crime affects everyone, and fighting it is everyone’s responsibility.’’
The event was attended by various church leaders, school children, captains of industries and Government officials.
