The accident occurred on Tuesday at the 140km peg at about 8.30am.
Detective Sergeant Jacob Dera (34) of the Law and Order Section was reportedly driving a Toyota Noah, which overturned and rolled several times when the right rear wheel came off.
The acting police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Sergeant Loveness Mangena, confirmed the accident yesterday.
“Dera was driving a private Toyota Noah, Registration Number ACJ 2863, when the rear right shaft broke. This resulted in the rear right wheel being dislodged. The driver lost control as the vehicle veered off the road. It overturned and rolled several times,” said Sgt Mangena.
She said of the11 passengers in the car, five were seriously injured while six others were treated at Gwanda Provincial Hospital and discharged the same day.
“Five passengers were seriously injured and are admitted to Gwanda Provincial Hospital. The other six sustained minor injuries. Dera’s body is at Gwanda Provincial
Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem,” said Sgt Mangena.
She said mourners were gathered at Colleen Bawn Mine compound.
She urged motorists to constantly check the condition of their vehicles to ensure that freak accidents do not catch them unawares.
