TWO police officers allegedly solici-ted for US$1 300 bribe from a woman who had been arrested for possessing a stolen vehicle so they could release her.
Jarmaine Rubatika (27) and Chrispen Magatsi (33) last week appeared in court charged with extortion.
They were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Don Ndirowei who remanded them out of custody to February 23 this year.
The court ordered the duo to report once a week at CID Frauds and not to interfere with State witnesses.
Prosecutor Ms Memory Chidavaenzi says sometime in December last year at Zindoga Shopping Centre, Waterfalls the pair acting in connivance with three other police detectives – Norman Gandanhamo, Alfred Munongi, Frazer Mhlanga – took US$1 300 from the complainant Bridget Chifamba.
Gandanhamo, Mhlanga and Munongi are currently out of custody on US$50 bail on similar charges.
It is alleged that Ms Chifamba had been arrested by the detectives for possessing a stolen vehicle.
After they arrested her, it is alleged, the detectives convinced the complainant that they could rescue her from being detained and prevent the car from being impounded.
Ms Chifamba, the State says, gave the detectives US$1 300 which they shared among themselves.
Instead of detaining Ms Chifamba the detectives allegedly set her free.
They were arrested last week.
