Police officers rewarded

DONNINGTON Police Station in Bulawayo yesterday awarded its outstanding police officers for their commitment in executing their duties with Constable Tavonga Gwabva scooping the best policing officer of the year award.
Const Gwabva was rewarded for his sterling efforts that saw him with his colleague smashing a fraud syndicate between December last year and May this year.

He received $100, a certificate and a shield courtesy of Fawcett Security Company.
On 20 December last year, Const Gwabva, who was working with Sergeant Taurai Mabhanya and Assistant Inspector Leonard Changunga, received a tip-off that a human resource manager at a leading transport company had been defrauding his employer for 24 months.
After conducting investigations Const Gwabva and his fellow officers established that the accused had defrauded his employer of $24 000 during that period.

They established that the accused would compile two pay rolls and on approval, he would then send one document with an extra worker to the accounts department.

The officers’ investigations led to the recovery of $995 from the accused’s second bank account.
Const Gwabva in conjunction with Const Lee Ndoka also arrested a suspect for possession of stolen goods worth $780 belonging to a local chemical company situated in Belmont industrial area.

The officer-in-charge of Donnington Police Station, Inspector Simon Chirume, challenged other officers to emulate the commitment shown by Const Gwabva.

He said the awards were meant to motivate police officers in executing their duties.
Another officer who was awarded for his efforts was Const John Mateke who arrested five suspects that were on the police wanted list in just five days.

The other officers were awarded for their discipline on and off duty while others were rewarded for executing their duties in the neighbourhood watch committee.

Speaking during the same occasion, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) Montrose Studios branch manager Mrs Nonceba Mnkandla challenged the police to be on high alert ahead of the festive season.
