POLICE have launched investigations into illegal burning in Burnside suburb, Bulawayo, that led to a raging inferno destroying a house and property worth US$500 000.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer, Mr Mhlangano Moyo, said the fire started at stand number 244 Arnold Way, where occupants were clearing thickets in preparation for construction, but the flames quickly spread out of control.

The clearing went ahead despite laws prohibiting burning during the fire season, which officially began on July 31 and runs until November 30.

Bulawayo Deputy provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, confirmed the matter.

“Police are investigating a case of deliberately causing a fire which the perpetrator failed to extinguish, resulting in damage to property,” said Assistant Inspector Ndlovu.

She warned members of the public against reckless and negligent use of fire as such was an offence under the country’s laws.

Assistant Inspector Ndlovu called on members of the public to desist from the practice but instead to employ safer and recommended methods of clearing and maintaining their premises.

“Community safety remains a shared responsibility and your cooperation in avoiding preventable hazards is vital in protecting lives and property,” said Assistant Inspector Ndlovu.

Environmental Management Agency (EMA) spokesperson, Mrs Amkela Sidange, said since the onset of this year’s fire season, 419 fire incidents had been recorded, destroying over 116 000 hectares of land.

The fire season officially kicked off on July 31st and will run up to November 30.

“Although this is lower than what we had recorded during the same period last year, when we had 1 856 fire incidents that destroyed over 490 000 hectares of land, it does not mean we should relax.

“We need to increase alertness as temperatures rise, the environment dries up and the prevailing windy conditions all call for undivided vigilance against fires by everyone,” said Mrs Sidange.
