HILLSIDE Teachers’ College is continuing with its work-for-fees programme, introduced in 2022 to provide an alternative for financially needy students, the institution’s principal, Dr Sifelani Jabangwe, has said.
He was speaking during the college’s 67th graduation ceremony last Friday, where guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation and Technology Development, Simelisizwe Sibanda, capped 325 graduands, of whom 227 were females and 98 males.
“The college, in line with the President’s philosophy of leaving no one behind and addressing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), introduced the work-for-fees programme, which offers an alternative to financially needy students,” said Dr Jabangwe.
In an interview later, Dr Jabangwe said the programme, started in 2022, currently has 30 students taking part, bringing the total to 60 since its inception.
In his keynote address, Deputy Minister Sibanda said the Ministry remains committed to ensuring that every learner, regardless of background or ability, has access to quality education.
“We are also expanding the Work-for-Fees Programme to ensure no student drops out of tertiary education due to financial constraints. Education must be a ladder, not a barrier. It must be accessible, equitable, and empowering,” said Deputy Minister Sibanda.
