POLICE have expressed concern over increasing cases involving the rape of pupils on their way to or from school and urged parents to always accompany their children.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said school authorities should encourage pupils to move in groups on their way to or from school.
She said in one recent case, a 12-year-old pupil was raped on her way from school in Hope Fountain.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said in another case which occurred in Uzumba in Mashonaland East, four male juveniles all aged 11 years, took turns to rape a nine-year-old girl who was on her way home from school.
“Police would like to appeal to school authorities and members of the public to help ensure the safety of pupils under their custody. School authorities should take it upon themselves to encourage pupils to move in groups,” she said.
“It has become very unsafe for pupils to walk on their own in both rural and urban areas. Where possible parents and custodians should escort their kids on their way to school and after school.” —@winnie_masara
