Police have expressed concern over rampant cases of poaching after they recovered 64 snares and animal carcasses worth over $11 000 at Buffalo Range Safari in Chire- dzi.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said no arrests had been made and investigations were still in progress.
“On 14 January 2016 game rangers were on patrol in the George area, Buffalo Range Safari Camp, when they noted a spoor of an animal which was pulling a branch and they made a follow-up,” she said.
She said they followed the spoor for about 100 metres and discovered the carcass of a buffalo in an advanced state of decomposition.
“Further checks led to the recovery of one female kudu, seven impala and one duiker with wire snares all in advanced states of decomposition. The animals are valued at $11 000.
“Thorough searches were carried on the surroundings and the rangers managed to remove 64 snares.
“No arrests have been made and investigations are still in progress,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.
