Police release names of Kwekwe accident victims

Police have released the names of six people who died in an accident involving a truck and a commuter omnibus along the Gokwe-Kwekwe Highway on Monday.

Six people died and nine survived with injuries after a Scania truck rammed into a stationary Nissan Caravan.
Both vehicles were coming from Gokwe on their way to Kwekwe when the driver of the commuter omnibus suddenly stopped to attend to a boot that had opened.

In a statement, National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the six victims have been positively identified by their next of kin.

“The victims have been identified as Nathan Maphosa (65), Beaula Ndebele (17), Mollen Ndlovu (64) all from Jojo Village in Zhombe, Francis Shayauno Mapuranga (38), Earnest Chireya (35) both from Shayauno Village in Gokwe North and Patrick Bhasopho (28) from Redcliff,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

Police urged motorists to be patient when driving and maintain the required braking distance.
“Police urge motorists to be patient on the roads and stop driving against the flow of traffic or one way. Above all, motorists should maintain the required braking distance when driving and follow all the road rules and regulations to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.

President Mnangagwa has directed Government to assist the bereaved families to bury their loved ones.
In a condolence message to the families, President Mnangagwa said the continued loss of lives in road traffic accidents was worrying.

He urged motorists to be vigilant especially ahead of the festive season.
