POLICE are keen to interview four Black Rhinos Queens players, who allegedly teamed up with Rufaro Machingura and Tariro Makunde, to assault a referee at Rufaro on Saturday. Machingura and Makunde were scheduled to appear at Mbare’s Magistrate’s Court yesterday but the case was deferred after the complainant, Mercy Maimbo on Monday said she was assaulted by the duo with the aid of four others.
Maimbo said she was coughing and spitting blood after the vicious assault.
This led the prosecution to refer the matter back to Mbare Police for the questioning of the quartet and a medical affidavit for Maimbo to be compiled.
The prosecution further said that the case will proceed with the two jointly charged with their co-accused still at large.
The incident took place after the NetOne Cup final.
Machingura and Makunde are still in police custody.
Machingura’s lawyer Claudius Tafirenyika of Tafireyi and Chikwana Law Firm said the duo may appear in court today.
“They may appear in court (tomorrow) today, but I am not yet sure since I need to confirm because I am occupied, maybe I will have to ask for a postponement,” he said.
The vicious attack on the referee has provoked an outcry across the country with the football community calling for the banning of the duo from all football activities.
Zimbabwe Women’s Football League chairperson Miriam Sibanda has already condemned the violent act by the two and said they had no place in football.
An image of Machingura lunging onto Maimbo’s chest has gone viral on social networks, damaging the image of women football in this country.
