THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has partnered the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe to develop a training manual to help equip the police with critical skills to fight cyber crime.
A training manual titled; “Fundamentals of ICT, Cyber Crime and Data Protection: A Training Manual for Law Enforcement,” seeks to equip police officers with knowledge and skills needed to effectively prevent, investigate and detect cyber-crimes. Training of police officers is set to commence soon.
This was revealed by the principal of Police Staff College, Commissioner Edward Tshuma, at a graduation ceremony of 622 police officers in Harare recently.
“In the area of research, the college successfully undertook a needs assessment survey and curriculum development for training of private security guards in line with the Cabinet decision (2022), and the final report has been submitted to relevant authorities for consideration.
“Presently, we are partnering with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe where we have developed a training manual.”
He said the Police Staff College is also collaborating with the European Union, Reserve Bank Zimbabwe Financial Intelligence Unit, National Prosecuting Authority, the judiciary, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission in developing a Financial Crime Investigation curriculum and manual.
The curriculum is designed to enhance police officers’ skills in investigating and detecting illicit financial flows such as terrorism and money laundering.
“Equally, our staff and students continue to enrich the academic and research landscape. Several articles have been published in reputable journals, while others are under review.
“These scholarly contributions ensure that the ZRP remains a thought leader in the region’s policing and governance discourse.”
On community engagement, he said, the college worked closely with the college of board of governors and hosted a cocktail at Police Golf Club to raise funds for construction of ablution facilities for students and staff as well as two lecture room blocks.
On innovations, he said, he was pleased to report that one of the prototypes developed by their students and lecturers, was the digital crime records Management System which has been taken on board by their office for further development.
