Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga says although relations between police and the public are improving, the force will continue making efforts to gain public trust.
In December last year, ZRP conceded that inadequate supervision and unbecoming behaviour by some members of the force had eroded public trust, faith and confidence.
In an interview last week, Comm-Gen Matanga said, “I personally understand that the relationship between members of the public and the Zimbabwe Republic Police is improving by day.”
The media, he said, continued to play a pivotal role in making sure that the relationship between the police and the public continues to improve. Among the measures that the force has put in place include conducting refresher, developmental and induction courses so that its members remain up to date with dynamic policing.
The courses are still ongoing.
On Friday last week, ZRP launched the Harare Traffic Decongestion Unit, a new model under which officers play and active role in decongesting some of the capital’s busy intersections.
So far, over 200 traffic officers have been trained on the new system.
Similarly, ZRP recently launched the Harare Province Patrol Unit, a 24-hour patrol unit to monitor Harare and Chitungwiza. There has been an increase in criminal activities in Harare and surrounding towns such as Chitungwiza.
