A Chitungwiza driver who fled police wanting to discuss why he drove through a stop sign, was chased and caught and then locked himself in his car to evade arrest found himself towed to the police station and finally arrested there. Isaya Chiwawu (33) of New Zengeza 4 refused to get out of his Toyota IST after being chased by police who wanted to discuss why he did not obey a stop sign.
The officers called for a tow-truck which came and towed him to the police station and there he was finally induced to surrender.
The incident took place on December 23 at around 9am at the corner of Tilco and Chimurenga roads in Zengeza 4.
The long saga started when Constable Milton Ndimbarimba was on duty at a roadblock at Zengeza 3 High near the Tilco and Chimurenga roads stop sign and saw Chiwawu allegedly shoot through the stop sign. The constable stopped him and asked to see his driver’s licence.
Instead of going through the procedures and paying his US$20 fine, Chiwawu sped from the scene at a high speed. He was stopped again on the escape route near Tilco Road.
The police officers asked him to step out of his vehicle but the determined Chiwawu locked himself inside.
Irked by Chiwawu’s actions, the officers tried in vain to unlock the vehicle until they decided to call for a tow truck.
In court later Chiwawu denied three counts of failure to obey regulatory signs, failure to comply with lawful instruction given by a police officer and obstruction before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo.
He was remanded on US$100 bail to January 2 for trial on the three charges.
Mr Tendai Mukariri prosecuted.
