TRAVELLERS were yesterday urged to report any driver violating road rules and regulations at their nearest police station or police checkpoints.
The call was made by Harare senior police officers, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, Vehicle Inspection Department and Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary, Tafadzwa Muguti.
They spent the better part of Unity Day yesterday conducting a traffic safety awareness campaign along Bulawayo Road to help reduce road accidents during the Christmas holidays.
“We want to ensure every traveller reaches his or her destination safely and returns alive,” said Muguti.
“Do not remain silent whenever you see a driver speeding or using a mobile phone.
“Do not allow conductors and drivers to overload their buses,” Muguti said.
As he was speaking, a speeding motorist almost ran over two police officers.
Brighton Tazarurwa accelerated as he got closer to the checkpoint, just missing the cops.
He was arrested for failing to comply with traffic police orders.
Brighton, who had two passengers on board, said he was rushing to drop his workmates.
Drivers were urged to carry their licences and ensure their vehicles are in a roadworthy condition before travelling.
“Do not drink and drive. Have a good rest before you embark on your journey.
“Take rest breaks every two hours or whenever you feel fatigued, and always stay within the speed limit. Only overtake when it is safe to do so, and avoid the use of cellphones while driving,” said Muguti.
