POLICE have warned the public against gathering in the streets for celebrations before the announcement of election results by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. Speaking at a Press conference yesterday, police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba also urged the media to disseminate information accurately and desist from being rabble-rousers.
“As for politicians, there is no need for them to continue holding political rallies. The elections have come and gone, people have spoken and its game over. ZRP would like to warn members of the public that hooliganism in all its manifestations will not be tolerated. Police officers shall remain vigilant and firm on the ground and shall arrest all those bent on causing mayhem,” she said.
Senior Asst Comm Charamba said it is important for Zimbabweans to appreciate that citizens had a duty to work for the progress of the country regardless of political persuasions.
“We are one family, an educated family for that matter, hence let us pool our resources and work for the common good of our country,’’ she said.
Snr Asst Com Charamba applauded Zimbabweans for taking heed of the message for observing peace, during and after the harmonised elections saying they demonstrated that they are a progressive and peace loving nation capable of conducting its elections in a peaceful and professional manner.
“We are gratified to note that people continue to observe peace, and the environment is generally tranquil. In this vein, our passionate appeal to the members of the public, as they wait for the election results, is for them to continue maintaining their cool and calmness and allow Zec to do its job unhindered.
“ZRP would also like to commend ZEC for its professionalism in conducting the harmonised elections. We are quite optimistic that if people continue to give them the leverage to do their job without interfering, they are going to release the election results timeously and professionally,” she said.
