THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has read the riot act to holders of firearms, saying unlawful use of guns was unacceptable.
This comes in the wake of a surge in the use of firearms to commit crimes of passion in the country.
Police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the abuse of firearms was unacceptable.
“The ZRP has recorded situations where firearms registered for various purposes such as crop protection or cash in transit are being misused,” he said.
“Some are being carried to public gatherings or in vehicles and in some instances they are being stolen.
“We also have cases where couples have disagreements and misuse firearms, for example, the recent case of Tafadzwa, who shot his girlfriend.”
Asst Comm Nyathi said some individuals have been caught trying to smuggle firearms into the country.
“We have some firearms being smuggled into the country and, in some instances, these firearms are hired by criminals,” he said.
“Police in Harare are investigating a robbery case, which occurred at a gas company at Sandton Park, Marlborough, where three unidentified suspects armed with an axe and pistols, attacked four company employees as well as two customers,” he said.
“The suspects went on to steal US$2 600, Z$1 050, six cellphones, a laptop, CCTV, DVR and 9kgs gas tank.”
Ass Comm Nyathi added:
“Police in Harare arrested Goodman Abraham Harishayi for theft of a 303 rifle at Mbudzi Roundabout.
“The suspect stole the firearm from a security guard who was escorting a haulage truck to South Africa.”
