POLICE have issued a stern warning to socialites and public figures regarding the dangers of disseminating unverified information on social media.

This follows a recent incident involving South Africa-based social media personality Norma Nyce, known as Mai Jordina.

She drew fierce criticism after alleging mistreatment by a CAG bus company crew during her journey from Harare to Chegutu.

She initially claimed that the crew had treated her poorly, only to later discover that she had incorrectly identified the bus as it belonged to a different company.

Acknowledging her mistake, Mai Jordina explained: “I assumed it was a CAG bus since I am a regular customer. It wasn’t until I received a call from one of the CAG directors after my post that I realised my error. It turns out that the bus I was on is part of a sister company.”

In light of the incident, national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stressed the importance of reporting grievances to the proper authorities instead of airing them on social media.

“It is unlawful to use social media to settle differences or post grievances. We urge individuals, including socialites, to turn to police for help instead,” he said.

In a separate incident, an individual from Borrowdale sent a threatening message to CAG, claiming to have footage of two buses from the company overtaking one another.

This person threatened to share the video online unless he received the contact information of the company’s directors.

The ZRP’s warning highlights the serious consequences that can arise from sharing unverified claims on social media.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and verify facts before posting, especially when such claims could damage reputations or incite unrest.
