A MAGWEGWE police officer got the shock of his life when he was assaulted with a wooden log on the head and fists for allegedly greeting a neighbour’s wife who in return ignored him.

Brilliant Mhlanga (26) stationed at ZRP Magwegwe was assaulted by Mpumeleli Nyoni (25) after he greeted his wife Nomzamo Masuku.

Nyoni appeared before provincial magistrate in charge of West Commonage Mr Abednico Ndebele facing attempted murder charges.

Prosecuting, Mr Mufaro Mageza said on 18 January 2016 at around 10am Mhlanga met Nyoni’s wife and greeted her but she did not respond.

“Nyoni who had gone to buy airtime at a certain house quickly came and accused Mhlanga of forcing his wife to respond to his greeting. He asked him why he was forcing his wife to respond to him but Mhlanga refuted the allegations.

“After that Mhlanga left the two standing and Nyoni ran after him. He caught him near Magwegwe West pre-school, and assaulted him with fists and kicked him all over his body. He further assaulted him with a wooden log which he used to hit him once on the head hence sustaining deep cuts,” he said.

Nyoni was arrested while Mhlanga was referred to Mpilo Central Hospital. Nyoni was remanded in custody to 2 February for trial.

In an unrelated case, a Bulawayo conductor appeared in the same court for allegedly raping his neighbour (17) and threatening to kill her father if she revealed the matter to anyone. Allen Moyo (28) appeared before Mr Ndebele facing rape charges. Prosecuting, Mr Mufaro Mageza said sometime in August 2015 at around 10pm the victim’s parents left her alone in the house.

“Later that day Moyo went to the girl’s house together with his friend who worked there. Moyo went on to sit on the same sofa with the girl and he started touching her body. The girl screamed but Moyo covered her mouth with his hand and went on to remove her clothes. He had sexual intercourse with her once without her consent,” he said.

The court heard that after raping the girl Moyo threatened to kill her father if she revealed the matter to anyone.

The matter came to light on 13 January 2016 when the victim revealed the matter to one of her family friends who then reported the matter to the police. The victim was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for medical examination. Moyo was remanded out of custody until 9 February for trial.
