Constable Arnold Madzikwa (31) was arrested last week following a routine check on the books, which showed that he had not banked the money.
Madzikwa, who is stationed at the Mashonaland West police headquarters finance section as a finance clerk appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate Mr Sam Chitumwa facing theft charges arising between
May 8, 2009 and December 8, 2010 when he received money for banking.
The amounts stolen ranged between US$20 and US$2 551. Prosecutor Mr Vote Zishiri said Madzikwa received cash from stations and receipted the money in the Miscellaneous Books for banking but did not bank the money.
He allegedly converted the money to his own use as he acknowledges receipt of the money but failed to account for it.
Mr Zishiri opposed bail arguing that investigations were still in progress while there were fears Madzikwa would interfere with witnesses.
The State also argued that his accomplice was still on the run.
However, Mr Chitumwa remanded Madzikwa out of custody on US$100 bail and ordered him not to interfere with witnesses and investigations.
