Politburo endorses aspiring candidates’ list

Addressing journalists after the decision-making body’s meeting in Harare last night, Zanu-PF national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said the Politburo had made a few alterations to the list submitted by the National Elections Directorate.

He said the full list of aspiring candidates would be released this morning.
“I am glad to announce that the Politburo welcomed our recommendations. There were one or two alterations but on the whole they welcomed our recommendations bringing to finality this exercise.

“Now we can safely state that we have got approved candidates from all provinces ranging from those who will be standing as Senators to those who will be standing as National Assembly members, provincial council members, on the women’s quota and local authorities, that is the councillors.”

The National Elections Directorate, chaired by Cde Khaya Moyo, on Tuesday scrutinised applications by all aspiring candidates before presenting its findings to the Politburo.
Cde Khaya Moyo said a number of candidates had sailed through unopposed at all levels.

“Details of all the candidates shall be given to you tomorrow (today) morning.
“There will be some competition in some constituencies, naturally which is healthy because we have always told all concerned that we are not only a revolutionary party, but a very democratic party because we fought for democracy.”

He said from deliberations done by Politburo members, it was clear Zanu-PF was poised for a landslide victory.
“From the deliberations, there is no doubt that we are headed for a thunderous victory come the harmonised elections,” Cde Khaya Moyo said.

He thanked the National Elections Directorate and provincial elections directorate members for working hard since the beginning of the exercise.
“They did a splendid job and we can now conduct our primary elections on Monday, June 24 looking towards the nomination day which has been set for June 28,” he said.

Sitting and aspiring Zanu-PF legislators presented their curriculum vitae and applications over the weekend at various districts across the country.
Some of the applications were accepted, while some were dismissed as they could not meet requirements stipulated in the rules and regulations governing the conduct of primary elections.

The applications were scrutinised by respective provinces before they were submitted to the National Elections Directorate.
The nomination was characterised by a huge turnout and peace as the revolutionary party gears itself for the polls that have been described as crucial for the future of the country.

The primary elections would be held at places that are normally used as polling stations countrywide, with all card-carrying members eligible to vote.
