ZANU-PF will not entertain any complaint from those who lost in provincial elections held at the weekend until the Politburo is briefed by the team leaders deployed to supervise the polls in various provinces. The party’s national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said in an interview yesterday that the Politburo was meeting tomorrow to receive reports from the team leaders.
Three candidates Cdes Philemon Mutongi (Mashonaland East) Ailes Baloyi (Masvingo) and Killian Sibanda (Bulawayo) contested the outcome of the polls alleging irregularities and the use of inappropriate registers in the voting process.
“We are not going to say anything on that until we receive reports from the team leaders deployed by the party to supervise the elections,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
Although the three losing candidates said they had submitted written reports to the party seeking nullification of the results, Cde Khaya Moyo, who also chairs the Zanu-PF National Election Directorate, said he had not received any complaint.
In his petition seen by Harare Bureau, Cde Mutongi said the voters roll was not availed to all wards for inspection and in some cases people were co-opted for vacant posts just for the purposes of voting.
Cde Mutongi queried his rival Cde Ray Kaukonde’s winning tally of 24,263 against his 2,616.
“If there is an audit of voters, surely did Cde Kaukonde garner 24,000 votes?” he said. “We, therefore, pray that there is a nullification of the results and a well monitored re-run full of transparency.”
In Masvingo, Cde Baloyi said he submitted his petition through the party’s team leader in the province Cde Nicholas Goche.
Cde Baloyi complained against the use of the police in the elections, saying they were used to quash any objection against the voting process. “We are urging the party to carry out an investigation based on our submissions and if it finds any merit it should nullify the results,” he said.
Cde Sibanda also raised concerns over the voters’ roll, saying it was at variance with the list of eligible voters submitted to the national commissariat department in Harare.
In Harare and Mashonaland West the losing candidates accepted their defeat and urged the winning candidates to work for the betterment of the party.
The elections were won by Cde Temba Mliswa in Mashonaland West, Cde Amos Midzi in Harare, Cde Andrew Langa in Matabeleland South, Cde Richard Moyo in Matabeleland North, Cde Callistus Ndlovu in Bulawayo, Cde Callisto Gwanetsa in Masvingo and Cde Ray Kaukonde on Mashonaland East.
