In a concerning turn of events, five political activists were arrested in Entumbane suburb for allegedly holding unsanctioned gatherings.
This group- Sithabiso Ncube, Evelina Sithole, Dumisani Nyathi, Buhle Ncube, and Tendai Marisa- has been linked to former Citizens Coalition for Change leader, Nelson Chamisa.
Local residents reported that the activists had been actively engaging with the community, encouraging citizens to align with the Blue Wave party and attend various meetings across the city and beyond.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their observations: “They were really committed to the cause, going door to door and speaking with people about the party. It was clear they were passionate about what they believed in.”
However, the activists faced swift opposition from members of the ruling Zanu-PF party, who allegedly harassed them and utilized their connections within the police force to facilitate the arrests.
Another resident leader expressed concern over the situation, stating, “We are worried for their safety. They were just innocently campaigning for their party and were not involved in any violent acts, despite the accusations against them.”
The arrests have raised alarm bells among residents and political observers, who argue that this incident reflects a broader pattern of suppression against dissenting voices in Zimbabwe.
As tensions escalate ahead of upcoming elections, the community is left questioning the implications for political freedom and safety in the region.
As the community rallies in support of the detained activists, many hope for a swift resolution and justice for those simply exercising their right to campaign.
