A CHIMANIMANI man has been arraigned before the courts charged with domestic violence after he allegedly assaulted his first wife whom he accused of chasing away his second wife.
Elias Gosi (29) of Shati Village, Chief Mutambara was convicted of Domestic Violence as defined in Section (3) (1) (a) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16 as read together with section 4(1) of the same act.
Gosi was ordered to fork out $300 in fines by Mutare magistrate Mr Langton Mukwengi.
He will be released upon payment.
Prosecuting was Mr Fletcher Karombe.
Allegations were that on December 15, 2015, Gosi received a phone call that his second wife had vacated their Nyambeya homestead and started blaming his first wife, Linet Nehwangura for having caused his new wife to leave him.
“Gosi started assaulting Nehwangura. As the complainant tried to escape she got injured,” said Mr Karombe.
Nehwangura sustained a deep cut on her left foot and some internal body injuries.
A medical report produced in court showed that she sustained serious injuries.
In a bid to defend himself, Gosi told the court that he was disciplining his wife.
“I erred Your Worship but in my view if a woman acts disobediently, it is the duty of the husband to discipline her,” he said.
“You will be released upon payment of the $300 fine because you committed a serious crime by putting the law into your own hands and ignoring the gospel that is being preached, the gospel of ending violence against women, “said Mr Mukwengi.
